The Collection spans the period from about 1260 to 1900 and consists of Western European paintings. The national collection of 20th-century art is held at Tate Modern and the national collection of British Art is held at Tate Britain. In 1997 Tate and National Galleries established the cut-off point between their collections at 1900 and exchanged those works they held from the other's time span.
